As I've said before, Melanie and I both agree that coloring pages are not a substitute for kids making their own art. However, they can be a great quiet time activity at home or on the go. They also make great additions to a party favor bag and are much, much better than yet another plastic do-dad that will eventually end up in the garbage! I've even heard from librarians who use them at events.
Spring Flower Coloring Page Activity Idea:
This spring flowers coloring page is not just a piece of paper, it's an activity idea perfect for story time at the library or circle time in the classroom!
After the kids color the page, cut out the individual flower pots and glue or tape them to wooden craft sticks or straws. You can see how we did this with our under the sea coloring page.
Once every child has their five flower pot puppets, they are ready for rhyming time! My kids and I made up a similar rhyme for our 5 little leaves coloring page, and I bet your kids can come up with their own spring version.
Five little flower pots waiting for the sun.
The first one said, "Oh my, let's have some fun!"
The second one said, "But there's frost still in the air!"
The third one said, "But we don't care!"
The fourth one said, "We want to grow and grow and grow!"
The fifth one said, "I don't see any snow!"
And whoosh went the wind, and out came the sun.
And the five little flower pots got ready for some fun.
Meet the illustrator:
Melanie Hope Greenberg loves the springtime! She is an award winning author and illustrator of more than 15 children’s books. Her cheerful, vibrant illustrations can be found in books such as Good Morning, Digger, Down in the Subway and A City Is, a book of poems by Norman Rosten, the poet laureate of Brooklyn. Her very popular Mermaids on Parade was selected as a Bank Street Best Book, and for the Texas Reading Club and PBS Kids Summer Reading Lists.
Melanie also visits schools and libraries to talk about the process of creating a book. If you live in New York City, you can frequently spot her at local festivals and events, reading from her books.
If you haven't read one of Melanie's books, yet, you are in for a treat!
