It's everyone's favorite time of year, and that means its time for a fall themed coloring page from Melanie Hope Greenberg, the children's book illustrator and author who graces us with a new coloring page each month. When Melanie suggested this fall leaf design for our September coloring sheet, I immediately knew I could turn it into a fun craft. I wasn't exactly sure how it would turn out, but I figured, let's give it a shot, the fun is always in the experimenting!
Now, of course there is nothing wrong with printing this beautiful page out and simply coloring it to your heart's content. You can get out the colored pencils, crayons, pens, pastels, whatever floats your boat and go to town...
However, if your kids want to turn it into a stained glass-type window decal just follow our easy instructions!

Suncatcher Instructions:
1. Print out the coloring page.
- Download and Print (by clicking on the following link you agree to our terms of service* see below) --> Leaves coloring page
2. Place a clear sheet of static cling paper on top of the coloring page
3. Trace coloring page outline with a black Sharpie on the back side of the cling paper. I used a chisel tip Sharpie.
4. Let dry. I like to wait about 20 minutes just to be sure.
5. Flip over clip paper and color as desired with permanent markers like these. Not all markers will work on this type of paper.
6. Let dry at least an hour. Very important.
7. Place on window! (Sharpie side goes against the glass)
What I love about this cling paper is that it sticks to the window using static cling. No stickiness! No having to wet the glass! Upon removal you might find a bit of ink residue on the glass. It comes off easy-peasy with rubbing alcohol.
Variations
But wait! There's more! If you don't want to make a clear fall leaf suncatcher, try one of these ideas:
- Print out on heavy card stock, color, cut out circle. Punch a hole in the top and thread a ribbon through the hole to hang up and admire.
- Before printing, reduce the size by 50%, print out 10 or more. After coloring, tape the discs to a string to make a pretty banner. This would be a great collaborative project for a classroom or library workshop.
However you use this fall leaf coloring page, it will brighten up your fall days!
